A few months ago I turned 41. One of the things I decided to do this year of my life is learn a few beauty secrets to help enhance the way I look (without having to go under the knife which I will NEVER do). Women who age gracefully and always look so well put together intrigue me, and I want to be able to do the same thing.
I put together 5 beauty secrets that I have discovered that really help me look my best when I head out on the town with my husband. These are fun things you can do and really don’t require a lot of your time or effort.
5 Beauty Secrets for Women Over 40
#1 Makeup Can Be Simple But Elegant
One of the things that I am learning at this age, is that I do not have to have on SO much makeup when I go out. A simple look of blush, tinted lip gloss, and minimal eye shadow is perfect for a day or night out with my husband. I used to cake on the makeup when we would go out and by the time the night ended, most of the time, my makeup had worn off, or it was smeared all over my face.
#2 Hair Care Should Be Simple and Easy
Last year, I used to flat iron my hair every single time I would wash it. I would apply a shine spray to it, condition it really well while in the shower, and then blow dry it AND THEN flatten it. To say it would take me almost an hour and a half to do my hair is an understatement.
Now, I use John Frieda Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Shampoo/Conditioner that I picked up from Walgreen’s to give my hair exactly what it needs.
It visibly brightens the brunette in your hair and it gradually lightens it for a sun kissed look. It’s safe for color treated or lightened hair and you can see instant results.
And — right now, Walgreens has these products on BOGO, which means if you buy one at regular price, you get the other for 50% off, and it is good until the last day of the month.
The golden color of the shampoo is what I think really helps visually brighten hair. It smells amazing and makes all the places in my hair with the natural tones lighten and gives me the look of having my hair highlighted without going to the salon.
I love shopping at Walgreens for my beauty products (and of course a few other things as well). The coupons and savings that they offer me help me save money, and look my best.
#3 Your Outfit Should Not Take You 3 Hours to Decide
One of the things that has really helped me has been to pair down my closet to just a few outfits I really, really love. The less I have in the clothing department, the easier it is to find something to wear.
Choosing an outfit that is simple and elegant is a great way to get yourself ready in a flash.
#4 Keep a Few Pieces of Both Silver and Gold Jewelry on Hand
When I was a teenager I had SO MUCH jewelry that it was constantly overflowing my 3 tall jewelry boxes. Now, I have a little roll up pouch that includes a few pieces of silver and gold jewelry that basically go with everything I own. It makes it easier to choose what I wear with my outfit.
#5 Choose a Quick Updo For Your Hairstyle
My favorite tip is creating a quick updo for my night out. Many times my husband will call me on the fly and tell me to get dressed because he is going to take me out to dinner.
When I jump out of the shower, I will towel dry my hair, run my fingers through it, and then put it up on top of my head using my clip.
Step 1 is to just run your hands through your hair right after you towel dry it.
Step 2 is to pull it all up together, twist and clip together at the top of your head.
Then I will pull a couple of tendrils out and dry them with the hair dryer (literally takes seconds because it is a small amount of hair) and then with my curler, create a few ringlets around my face.
These tips are perfect to get you looking your best at any age, but these are definitely great for anyone 40 and over. The more simple I can make my beauty routine, the better!
Do you have any hair care tips? If so, I would love to hear them. Be sure to visit your local Walgreens and snag a BOGO on your favorite John Frieda products.
