My daughter will be going to college starting in January. While she is going to be living at home and doing online school, there are still things that every single college student needs to have. Today, I am sharing that list with you. While some of these may not seem that important, to me, they are definite needs for every college kid regardless of whether doing college from home online, or living on campus.
10 Things Every College Student Needs
#1 An Endless Supply of Microwavable Soup
One of my friends who is in his second year of college says that the one thing he lives off of more than anything is microwaveable soup. It doesn’t take up a lot of space, and if you get the cans that don’t need a bowl, then all you really need to do is have a supply of spoons available.
For my daughter, this would work great for her as well. When she is finishing an art project, she can pop in some mac n cheese or soup to give her something to eat until time for her next meal
#2 A Bible for Life’s Direction
Our faith in our family is very important, so making sure my kids and all the college kids I come into contact with have a Bible for when they need direction in life is super important to me.
Knowing that my daughter will know where to turn to when she needs a little peace in her life sets my mind at ease as a parent.
#3 Emergency Money for Those Little Emergencies
Every college student runs into an issue at one time or another when their funds are low and they need some cash. Even those that do school at home can have this problem. Making sure that they have an emergency fund set aside can set both your mind and theirs at ease.
#4 A One Cup Measuring Cup
Now, this may sound weird, but a one cup measuring cup, especially if you get the glass one can be used for so many things in the microwave for your college student. If they need to heat water for tea or coffee, doing it in this is the perfect way to go.
#5 Stamps and Stationery
Every college student should write home every now and then, but then again, they may also need to send a letter of thanks to a business or an interview place. Having a supply of stamps and stationery will always encourage them to write and send a letter home as well.
#6 Instant Coffee
Seriously — do I need to even explain why this is needed? If you cannot make regular coffee, then instant will have to do — and with this and the one cup measuring cup above, then you can have a cup of coffee whenever you need it — especially when your college student needs to pull an all nighter.
#7 Netflix Subscription
One of my daughter’s favorite downtimes is watching her favorite shows, especially after she has had a long study session. Vegging out on her favorite Netflix shows helps her to wind down, so we made sure to get her a year subscription. She also uses this to watch documentaries and since she is going to be doing art college online, she has really been enjoying watching Bob Ross episodes!
#8 A Gift Card to A Local Grocery Store
Making sure your college student has a gift card to the local grocery store closest to their dorm will always make sure that they have something to eat. You never know when they are going to need something and making sure they have that little extra gift will ensure that they are able to get what they need.
#9 Loads and Loads of Pencils and Pens
Every college student goes through three things — tons of paper, tons of pencils, and tons of pens. Grab some extra packs the next time you are at the store and pack a care package to send to them.
#10 The Ability to Know They Can Come Home Anytime
One thing I hear all college students say is that sometimes they don’t feel like they can come home. The best thing you can do for your child is be there for them, but always let them know the door is always open and that they can come home anytime they want.
If for some reason college is not working out for them, don’t make them continue on. Give them the option to take a semester off, come home and take a closer look at what they want out of life. It can make all the difference in the world.
