If you ever feel as if you are trapped in the same place for too long, going through the same routines and never leaving the house: you might be in need of a good road trip. Road trips are amazing because you get to escape the real world, set off in your car and enjoy the open road for a while. They are an amazing way to travel on a budget and you will often find some amazing little places in the car that you’d have never discovered if you travel by plane.
Of course, when you have a family it can be a little bit more of a tricky thing logistically to do. It can involve a lot of planning, a little stress, and some tantrums if you aren’t careful too. But if you do manage to pull it off, a road trip with your family can be the best way to spend quality time with the people you love the most in this world.
Choose a destination
Sit down with your family members and take some time to decide where you want to travel to. It could be that you only drive 100 miles, or you could be going over the entire country and travel 1000.
It doesn’t matter how long the journey will be, it is a case of finding a place where everyone wants to visit. Try to pick out a route where there are lots of things to see and do along the way.
This way you can have regular breaks and everyone has the chance to stretch their legs and get some fresh air on the way.
Be sure to look carefully on the map as you may find some hidden gems to visit that you otherwise wouldn’t have seen.
Als0 — don’t forget to pack all your smart devices so that you can catch up on some of your favorite Netflix shows along the way. I love that most of the shows on Netflix can be downloaded to your devices so that even if you don’t have wifi, you can still binge watch — especially if you have a 12 hour drive ahead of you.
I love doing this when I am flying because many times I choose to bypass the in flight wifi charge, so I download some of my favorite tv shows so I can watch them while we are flying to our destination.
The great thing about driving across the country rather than taking a plane is that it is much much cheaper to do. It might take you a lot longer to get to your final destination, but you are able to stay in hotels along the way and your overall trip will be much more fun and affordable for you and your family.
Go whenever you want
Unlike a plane where you need to book way in advance and then make sure you are there at a certain time of the day, traveling on the roads gives you the freedom to jet off on an adventure at any time of day and whenever you like.
You could wake up tomorrow and suddenly decide that you don’t want to be stuck at home for the weekend, so you can just pick a route, get in the car and go.
It is a much more flexible way to travel and you can make anything you want out of it. Plus, a short break every now and again is hugely beneficial to your health.
Here are some great shows you can download from Netflix for your next adventure!
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
- Fuller House
- Christmas Prince
- Grey’s Anatomy
Pack what you need AND want
One of the biggest benefits of traveling in your car rather than trekking to the airport is that you have a ton more space available for packing up your things.
It means you don’t have to limit yourself to a certain number of jeans or items, you can add in the things you want and what you know you will get good use out of.
For the kids, some snacks for the road and clothes for any weather eventuality: but after that you can have some fun. Bring along some toys and a your Netflix membership to keep the kids entertained.
Bring your own gadgets to play with on the road and even bring a yoga mat if you fancy doing some stretches while you are out of the car.
On an airplane you don’t have much of a choice as far as the journey time goes. If you need a break from travel and sitting down the only thing you can really do is stand up and walk to the toilets and then back again. However when you are in your own car, if you suddenly feel tired or bored you can pull over at the next available spot and stretch your legs.
Make sure you take breaks regularly so that you are alert on the road and you don’t start feeling drowsy. Get lots of snacks and stay hydrated on the trip. If you spot an interesting looking landmark or a cute little cafe on the trip, there’s no reason you can’t stop and check it out. Take it at your own pace and enjoy the ride.
And best of all, don’t forget to bring along the Netflix!!
