People loving their pets is nothing new but nowadays, we want constant company from our little companions. For the most part, this a great thing because it means people love and take good care of their pets. They are often even considered part of the family.
In some cases when things don’t happen as we might wish, dogs and cats are even become our children. For these reasons, it is becoming very common to see people traveling with their dogs, cats and other pets. If you are thinking about traveling with your pet, there are a few important points that you should consider when planning your vacations. These points will make your travel plans easier and will keep your loved one out of danger.
If you are flying, choose a pet friendly airline
Before you buy your airline tickets, make sure they accept your type, size and breed of animal. Call and ask the airline specifically, as information online can be confusing.
Also ask for all the requirements they have to authorize an animal to be on the plane. Some airlines are more strict than others, so, take your time and decide wisely and consider the comfort of your pet and of course your budget. You don’t want to show up at the airport and be denied boarding!
Watch out for the temperature
If the trip that you are planning is a road trip, you will have to pay attention to the temperature when you leave the dog in the car. This is a last resort but you may have to do so if the place you have chosen to eat is not pet friendly.
Temperatures in the vehicle can jump up to 20 degrees over the temperature outside and dogs are very prone to heatstroke. Make sure you pay attention to these factors and don’t leave your pet in the car if not absolutely necessary. If you have to, leave a good amount of water and leave the windows open as much as you can, without risk to your pet or the people near your vehicle.
Toys and treats
Wherever you go, your pet should enjoy vacation as much as you! Make sure you pack your pets favorite toys and some healthy treats. In doing this, you will keep your pet calm and happy during all the travel time. This also helps in case you are on the road and your pet presents motion sickness. You will be able to use treats to give it the proper medicine. Pet owners will enjoy this tip if they never considered it before!
Again, think about your pet as you would think about yourself. Make sure that the normal food you feed to your dog is available at the place that you will be traveling to.
If not, consider bringing the amount of food necessary for the duration of the trip. It is very important to not to modify the diet and feeding routing of your pet because it can lead to tummy problems and you don’t want that to damper your trip!
Schedule a visit to the vet
The last but the most important tip is this. Regardless of if you will fly with your pet or take a road trip inside your own country, a visit to the vet before each trip is the most important thing you can do. It will determine if everything is fine with your pet and they are fit to travel or if you should consider changing your plans.
If the veterinarian deems it unsafe for your pet to travel, finding a daycare may be your next best option. Also, it is necessary to visit the vet in case you are traveling internationally because the country you are traveling to will request certain medical paperwork.
