For a long while after having kids, going out on the town with your best girlfriends takes something of a back seat. You are exhausted, emotional, and don’t feel your best, and going out just doesn’t have the appeal it used to. But at some point, you will want to get out there and start enjoying your life again, spend some quality time with the girls, and have some fun, laughter, and maybe a dance or two.
You should never feel guilty about wanting to get back to the real world. The occasional drink won’t harm you, and there is plenty of scientific evidence that suggests spending time with our best pals is good for the mind, body, and soul, too. In fact, the only thing that might be stopping you is the fact that you feel like you look something of a mess, and can’t find the clothes to wear to make you feel comfortable and confident.
If this sounds familiar, please read on. These simple tips will help you find something to wear, look fantastic, and enjoy your night on the town. Let’s take a closer look at some of your options.
First and foremost, when you have young children, there is every chance that it will be showing. Your skin complexion could be going crazy because you are under a lot of stress and pressure. You might have dark rings under your eyes because of the sheer exhaustion of seemingly endless sleepless nights. And you might even look pasty – possibly unwell – because you haven’t eaten, slept, or taken five minutes for yourself for months – and maybe longer. Here’s what you can do.
There is a huge range of concealers and correctors on the market which you can buy from your local department store or beauty shop. Find a concealer that matches your natural skin tone, and use it to hide all those blemishes. Look for green tone correctors, too, which works like magic on red spots and outbreaks. For the dark circles under your eyes, try and get as much sleep as possible before you go out.
It will be tough, sure, but maybe your partner could step up just this once. You will be surprised at how fresh you will feel – and look – after a good night’s sleep, although of course, there will still be plenty of evidence of constant night waking! Chilled cucumber slices can add valuable hydration and soothe the skin around your eyes. And there are plenty of vitamin-based creams out there that can help you hide the dark circles, before applying your usual makeup.
It’s worth preparing a while in advance, as the chances are if you leave finding your clothes until the last minute, it will probably end in stress. Your body changes a lot when you have children, so don’t be surprised if your best clothes don’t quite look the same.
But don’t feel like you have to go out and spend a fortune. In fact, doing so will inevitably be a waste of money, as in the future when you have more time on your hands you might shed a lot of that baby weight and return to your normal size. Budget clothes stores will be your best friend, here, and although the materials used in cheap clothes will warp over time, they are usually OK for the first few washes.
Even if you are heading out for a glitzy dinner or social event, there’s no need to spend a lot of money. A simple black dress is all you need, and you can then put a focus on using accessories to make the difference. Choker necklaces can make you look incredibly glamorous, and it might be time to open up your old jewelry box again to find some stunning earrings and statement pieces. Don’t forget about your arms, either. Going out usually means wearing short sleeves, or no sleeves at all. And a few well-chosen bangles and chunky bracelets can lift your look from drab to fab in no time.
If you still feel comfortable in heels, go for it. However, bear in mind that your once-thin ankles might still be a little swollen, so don’t push yourself hard just for the sake of looking good. If you are incredibly uncomfortable after an hour or two, it’s going to show. Plus, if you are feeling a little merry, it would be no surprise if the graceful walk you are trying to portray turns into more of a totter, instead.
Choose flats or thick wedges so you can just get out there and enjoy your time with friends – you don’t want to be worrying about blisters or sore toes just for the sake of getting into a pair of killer Jimmy Choos.
As a new mom, the chances are your regular handbag has become something it wasn’t initially meant for. Look in any mom’s bag, and you’ll find everything from crumbling rusks to spare diapers – and they look more like backpacks than classy, sophisticated handbags. So, why not treat yourself and go out with a cute clutch instead? Put some top-up makeup in there, bring blotting paper instead of a powder compact, and don’t forget some breath mints to keep yourself fresh!
Finally, a little advice – which isn’t meant to be preachy in any way. But when it’s your first night out for what seems like an eternity, you don’t want to bite off more than you can chew. If you go out looking beautiful, you want to come out that way, too, so be careful about how much you drink. You might have managed a couple of glasses of wine in quick succession before you were pregnant, but after all this time without a drop, it’s going to affect your tolerance.
It’s easy to get carried away with your friends, too. But they might not have the responsibilities you do the next morning, and even if you are having a great night, there might be a payback when you wake up if you push yourself too hard. Hope you have a fantastic time – enjoy!
