Last week, I committed THE worst sin on the planet. I. Let. Us. Run. Out. Of. Ketchup. Yes–we ran out and I was fixing corn dogs for lunch. You can imagine the uproar that having no ketchup had caused. However, I knew I had seen somewhere a recipe for homemade ketchup and I got the bright idea to try and make a batch homemade.
Once again, the Hillbilly Housewife did not let me down. She always has exactly the recipe I need! Can I tell you how much more flavor this homemade ketchup recipe has than the stuff on the shelf? You have to make a batch yourself and taste the difference. You will be totally shocked!

- 6 ounce can tomato paste
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup tap water depending on desired consistency, I like it with 1/3 cup
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 pinch cloves
- 1 pinch allspice
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
-
In a medium bowl combine all of the ingredients with a wire whisk. Blend well. Scrape the mixture into a pint-sized, resealable container. Chill overnight, to blend the flavors. Use wherever ketchup is desired.
-
To reduce the sodium content simply omit the salt.
-
To reduce the sugar content replace the brown sugar with 1-teaspoon molasses and 1/4 cup granulated Splenda.
Making ketchup is super easy and it is a great way to reduce your grocery bill!
