Homemade Ketchup

Last week, I committed THE worst sin on the planet. I. Let. Us. Run. Out. Of. Ketchup. Yes–we ran out and I was fixing corn dogs for lunch. You can imagine the uproar that having no ketchup had caused. However, I knew I had seen somewhere a recipe for homemade ketchup and I got the bright idea to try and make a batch homemade.

Ketchup

Once again, the Hillbilly Housewife did not let me down. She always has exactly the recipe I need! Can I tell you how much more flavor this homemade ketchup recipe has than the stuff on the shelf? You have to make a batch yourself and taste the difference. You will be totally shocked!

Print
Homemade Ketchup
Ingredients
  • 6 ounce can tomato paste
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup tap water depending on desired consistency, I like it with 1/3 cup
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch cloves
  • 1 pinch allspice
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl combine all of the ingredients with a wire whisk. Blend well. Scrape the mixture into a pint-sized, resealable container. Chill overnight, to blend the flavors. Use wherever ketchup is desired.
  2. To reduce the sodium content simply omit the salt.
  3. To reduce the sugar content replace the brown sugar with 1-teaspoon molasses and 1/4 cup granulated Splenda.

Making ketchup is super easy and it is a great way to reduce your grocery bill!
