It is the perfect blend to use on those nights when it’s the perfect night for grilling up some steaks or burgers. This Montreal seasoning is made right from the spices you already have on hand and offer the perfect balance of savory flavors and tasty herbs.
How to Make Your Own Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning
Did you know that Montreal steak seasoning originated in a Montreal based deli? It seems that one of their employees experimented with making his own blend of mixes and it was SO popular, all the customers started asking if they could take a bottle home.
You will see a few different versions of this out there, but I decided to combine two or three recipes to create my own version and make sure it was the best one out there.
Montreal Steak Seasoning Ingredients
No one really knows what’s in the original version from back in the day, but after playing around with the flavors, I discovered that the major spices used are salt, pepper, garlic, onion, dill, and cumin.
From this point, what you add is entirely up to you. You can adjust based on your own tastes, but I promise you — the blend I created is absolutely delicious and so full of flavor.
- 2 TBSP whole peppercorns, crushed
- 2 TBSP Paprika
- 2 TBSP Kosher Salt
- 1 TBSP Garlic Powder
- 1 TBSP Onion Powder
- 2 tsp dried dill
- 2 tsp dried rosemary
- 2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 tsp ground cumin
- Crush the peppercorns with a mortal and pestle or place in a plastic ziplock bag and crush with the back of a frying pan.
- Combine all the ingredients together. Transfer to an airtight jar. The flavors are the best if used immediately, but the blend can be stored at room temperature and used for several months.
