How to Make Vanilla Milkshakes Without Ice Cream

I totally LOVE milkshakes. Now that I can make them at home, there is really no need to get one from a fast food or ice cream joint. In my family's opinion — they are even better from MY kitchen.

The ingredients are all pantry staples and they are made without ice cream 🙂 This recipe for homemade vanilla milkshakes without ice cream is a home run!

The fun thing about making something like this is that you can add any flavors you want to it.

Some of mine are chocolate, strawberry, caramel, coffee flavored and more. So yes — you can make a milkshake without ice cream. Here's how simple it is.

Serving up your milkshakes can be just as fun and festive. I like to use cool frosted mugs like these and serve with these oversized milkshake straws. You can also use this fun milkshake mixer when making milkshakes as well. The possibilites are endless.

I have played around with this recipe quite a bit over the years. We have made many variations from it — chocolate milkshakes without ice cream, Oreo milkshakes, and more.

You can add strawberries, hot fudge, pineapple, mint and green food coloring — you can totally play around with this and make some really delicious tasting shakes, but vanilla is always my favorite.

My husband's favorite though is my Emerald Mint milkshake. I made it using Green Food Coloring, and I love serving them in these cute colorful shake glasses!

Making your own milkshakes at home is simple and easy to do.

How Can You Make Milkshakes Without Ice Cream?

The key to making a milkshake without ice cream is having a combination of milk and ice. The two together create that creamy milkshake base that you are used to, but can be done without ice cream — which makes it great.

Ice cream in general can get freezer burned, but milk can be used for quite a long time. Plus — you can totally take it with you when you go camping and make milkshakes on the go too!

Making homemade milkshakes are easy even when you don't have ice cream!

Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ice
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons corn oil plus a 5-second squirt of non-stick spray for emulsification purposes

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until well incorporated. DO NOT leave out the oil. If you do the shake will not turn out right. Just trust me.
  2. If you want a thicker shake, add more ice. For thinner shakes, just add more milk.

Can you use coconut oil instead of corn oil? Or maybe canola oil? Thanks

I’m just trying to verify that these turn out ok because I’m going to try and make them today As a surprise for my baby sisters today but the ingredients don’t quite fit me. Like I’m not so sure about the thickness of the milk shake. And then we don’t have cooking spray but we do have vegetable oil so what exactly will happen to the taste of the milk shake?
