With the average American summer vacation costing a little under $2,000, most full time travelers are on the lookout for money saving tips. While there are plenty of budget vacation options out there, travel gear isn’t an area you should scrimp on. Instead, look to buy quality items once and fit everything you need into a single carry-on. This stuff will last you a lifetime and help you to travel further with a lighter load on your back.
Spend More, Buy Less
If you aren’t keen on increasing your overall spend on travel items, then simply buy less. A good rule is to spend twice as much, but on half as many products. For instance, you might travel with six, cheap cotton t-shirts. Cotton is comfortable, but it wasn’t made for travel.
Head to a dedicated travel store and pick up something made of quick-dry polyester or merino wool. It will be double the price, but can be worn for twice as long between washes, takes half the time to dry and therefore you don’t need so many clothes. You can trade six cheap t-shirts, for three high quality travel versions.
Use Tech to Your Advantage
Technology is of course expensive, but it can free up endless space in your suitcase. If you already have a smartphone or tablet, then this can hold all your books. Even carrying just one or two books will weigh you down, so look for an eBook or audiobook version. Your phone can also hold flight tickets, maps and guidebooks, so leave your paperwork at home. If you need a laptop, spend what you can afford on getting something that is of a high build quality, while being thin and light.
Keeping Warm Without the Bulk
Some of the world’s most spectacular places are unfortunately cold, meaning you may think that you need plenty of thick jumpers and coats. Instead, look for high quality thermal base layers as well as using travel blankets. These take up almost no space but are seriously effective at keeping you insulated. You can also wear a middle layer and an outer layer, adding and removing them depending on the conditions.
Traveling light should be the aim of any serious explorer. No one wants to be lugging around bulky baggage, constrained by how far they can go at a time. Condense your items down to a carry-on, by putting together a packing list of the highest quality. Buy it once and you’ll rarely have to think about purchasing these items again.
