I have guests arriving at my house on Monday and I am in a frantic to get my house cleaned up. It is a hot mess right now. Everywhere I look there are piles of my family’s “things” where they have just laid them around — not to mention all the dog and cat toys that happen to be strewn everywhere.
There are 5 simple things I can do though to get my house in tip top shape for the holidays so I thought I would share them with you.
5 Holiday Cleaning Tips
1. Invest in your family’s help
Whether you have little kids, or like me you have BIG kids who are almost grown, let them help you get the house in order. Make it a game, and give them each a specific chore that they can do.
In my house, my daughter usually gets laundry duty when we are getting ready for company. My son gets dusting duty, and my husband gets dish duty. I get bathroom duty because I have a certain way I like my bathrooms clean, so I set out to get that done.
By splitting up the chores between your family members, you will not have so much on you, and the house gets cleaned up faster.
2. Break big tasks down into daily tasks
If your home has not been straightened up in a while, it can be an overwhelming task, so instead of trying to get it all done in one day, break it down and do certain tasks each day. For me — my week looks like this —
Monday: Clean ceiling fans and windows
Tuesday: Wash bedding and put fresh sheets on all the beds
Wednesday: Dust the furniture
Thursday: Pick up clutter around the house and put it back where it belongs
Friday: Sweep and mop the floors.
When I sweep and mop the floors, I love using my Swiffer Bissell Steamboost Power mop because it makes my job easier and makes my floors look amazing!
3. Straighten before bed
Every night before you go to bed, find at least 5 things that need to be put away and get them put where they belong. This will mean less work for you the following morning when you have to straighten the house back up.
4. Create a warm inviting feel in your guest bedroom
Find out exactly when your guests are arriving and make a gift basket for them for the room. Include things like a candle, room spray, chocolates, and maybe an easy listening cd so that they can unwind. Leave a couple of books and magazines on the night stand so that they have something to look at while they are resting.
5. Don’t Stress Out
Last but not least, if you can’t get everything done that you wanted to, don’t stress. You live IN your home and I am sure your guests are not going to flip out on you if your windows and ceiling fans are not clean. Just work on making sure your main living area is straight and you will be fine.
The main thing is making sure your guests feel welcome and loved.
