France has some of the most beautiful cities and landscapes in all of Europe, combining beaches, mountains and small villages that burst with character.
I have always dreamed of one day flying from my little town here in Kentucky to visit France. There are so many places to see and cities I would love to visit.
France has it all and will make a perfect destination for me and you in Europe. Here are some of my bucket list places that are a must see in France.
Paris is the most visited destination in France attracting millions of tourists from around the globe each year. The capital is a center for food, culture, art and fashion and has several famous landmarks.
Visitors will always want to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre while later soaking up some of the Parisian culture in one of the many cafés along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Other major attractions include the Arc De Triomphe, an abundance of old Basilicas and churches and the world-famous Champs-Elysees.
The French Riviera on the southern coast has some of Europe’s most lavish beaches. And Nice is a major hub and tourist destination in this part of France. A total of seven kilometers of coastline attracts beach-goers on a sunny day. And the nearby old port, which is full of luxurious boats and yachts of the rich and famous make an excellent place for a few photographs. The promenade is lit up during the evening and creates a very romantic atmosphere.
If you’re looking for art, head to the Musee des Beaux to see an extensive collection of 16th to 20th-century masterpieces. You can also find other museums covering a range of topics and niche genres, a theatre and a Russian Orthodox cathedral. Nice, in a nutshell, makes a perfect spot for a holiday in France to enjoy the beach and soak up the culture in a warm, beautiful environment.
Lyon is both historical and cultural. A massive Roman Amphitheatre sits in the center of the city along with a mixture of both Renaissance and medieval styles of architecture. Walking through the older parts of the city feels as though you’re transported back in time to a different era. And large parts of Lyon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site too.
There’s also something else which makes this French city famous around the world. And that’s fine dining and the very high standard of living. You can find Michelin-star restaurants on almost every street serving up some of the best international and French cuisines. And if you want to indulge in some of the café culture, you’ll see plenty of spots lining the clean, shady streets.
And that’s not all. Lyon hosts various festivals and events such as the Festival of Lights, the Greater Lyon Film Festival and Dance Biennale. There’s also several concerts, exhibitions and daily shows around Lyon’s beautiful city center. Combine all of this, and you have a dynamic and vibrant destination in France that has something for everyone creating the perfect city to take a more sophisticated vacation.
Located in southwestern France along the Garonne River, the city of Bordeaux has a lot to boast about. Things like producing fine wine, 18th-century mansions and a large Gothic Cathedral. Bordeaux has the nickname as the ‘City of Art and History’ and houses more than 300 historical monuments and ancient buildings dating back to the Romans. There are also several art museums with the most famous being the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Tourists can relax in one of the many public gardens that are always full of colorful flowers making a quiet and serene environment away from the noise of the city.
Toulouse is right on the border of Spain and within just two hours of one of Europe’s micro-nations: Andorra. One of the highlights of this destination is the terracotta bricks used in the construction of the city’s buildings. This earned the nickname ‘La Ville Rose’, or The Pink City in English. Central Toulouse has an abundance of 18th-century buildings making it an attractive area to walk around. Other notable sites include the Canal du Midi, which is a 17th-century canal, City Hall and the Opera House.
If you’re visiting Toulouse, one of the must-do things is to visit the Jardin des Plantes. It is a gigantic park stretching for several blocks. Inside the park, you’ll find a museum, botanical garden and several cafes serving some of the best coffee in the city. Expect to spend at least a few hours inside, especially during the summer. There you will soak up the atmosphere, enjoy your surroundings and watch the world of Toulouse pass by.
Marseille, in southern France, is also a top destination. The port city has an abundance of history dating back to the Greeks. It has always been at a crucial trade crossroads. Tourists will see lots of cathedrals with the most famous being the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. The city center is also a hotspot for shopping. It has the latest fashion outlets and boutiques selling a range of designer clothes on almost every street. Combine all this with its warm Mediterranean climate and France’s second city makes a great stop on a trip to France at any time of the year.
