How To Experience London Like A Local

Sharing is caring!

A trip to London is undoubtedly on the travel bucket list of many people around the world!

However, there are distinctly two different types of travelers that can be identified in cities like London. Those are people who look like hopeless tourists, and people who look like they truly belong!

The trick to visiting London is to do it like a local rather than traditional sightseeing. With this in mind, here are some tips for how to experience London like a local.

Make Use Of a Storage Service

Whatever you do, do not pack your luggage around with you in London. Not only is it a dead giveaway that you are not a local, but it is also inconvenient for travel.

This can easily be remedied thanks to the numerous Stasher luggage storage locations in the British capital. Store your belongings for the duration of your sightseeing activities. Then, pick them back up to resume your travel plans.

Use The London Underground

The tourist bus is great for seeing the main sights. Be sure to also make use of the London underground system. You can connect to any part of the city that you desire.

Eat At Smaller Independent Restaurants

Stay away from the big chain eateries! Treat yourself to an opportunity to enjoy some of the best food that it has to offer. Sample dishes that you have never tried before from independent restaurants that don’t have branches in other locations.

Street markets are a great place to mingle with and eat like a local.

Hit Up The Lesser Known Markets

There are plenty of indoor and outdoor markets to explore in London, but the trick is to visit the ones that might not be in all of the main tourist guides.

Everybody in the world knows about Borough Market and Camden Market, but what about some of the lesser-known places like Columbia Road Flower Market and Portobello Road Market?

Those two specifically specialize in every floral and every antique and curio respectively, they are never as crowded as the others and they aren’t packed with tourists.

Don’t Be Scared To Get Lost!

Don’t get too obsessed with sticking to any particular tourist guide or path when exploring London. When walking through central London in particular, getting lost and coming across something that you didn’t necessarily expect is part of the charm.

Of course, if you do end up in a situation where you have completely lost your bearings, there are plenty of tools to help you out.

Any smartphone will be able to tell you your exact location in relation to anything you might have been looking for in the first place, and the great thing about London is that you are never too far away from an underground station that will allow you to connect to the rest of the network and get back on track in no time at all.

Embrace the fun of not planning any particular route on your travels!
