Summer is always a very busy time for us. Not only am I food and travel blogger (who goes on TONS of trips during the summer months), but my husband and I are also youth leaders at our church. To say that my summer is full and bustling is an understatement. The minute that I have a second to breath, I like to do my favorite thing – read my Southern Living magazine.
I am all about reading whether it be books, magazines, blog articles – you name it, and I will read it. Reading is a great way to relax and unwind – especially when your summer has been as hectic as mine!
While I was doing our weekly grocery shopping at Kroger the other day, I decided to go over to the magazine rack and see if the newest issue, the August issue, was out. I also decided to pick up copies of PEOPLE, Real Simple, and PEOPLE: Princess Diana: 20 Years Later.
I usually like to sit on my back porch where the breeze is and watch my hummingbirds while I read my magazines, but – it has been pouring down rain here for 3 solid days. I decided to sit inside with my favorite cup of coffee to read some of the great articles I found.
Some of my favorite articles in this issue talk about creating a dream beach house (something I am really interested in doing), and some amazing slow cooker and rice cooker summer suppers. Anytime I can find a recipe that will help me cut my time down in the kitchen, I am all ears.
Summer should be about slowing down and enjoying the days with your kids, your family, and even yourself. If we are always so busy giving to others, without taking time for ourselves, then we are doing a disservice to our family as well as to us.
If you are not sure about what you can do for the summer, here are a few of my favorite ideas. And don't forget to take your Southern Living magazine with you!
Pool: When my daughter goes to the pool to hang out with her friends, I don't even go to swim. I find the shadiest corner I can, pull up a chair and either rest my eyes, read a book, or read my magazine.
Back Porch Sitting: Your back porch can be an oasis and the perfect place to relax and read your magazine.
Your Own Living Room: Turn the TV off, put your feet up and read your favorite magazine – People, Southern Living, or Real Simple
On the Plane: Being a travel blogger, I always try to make sure to take a magazine with me on the plane. It's a great way to pass the time, especially if it is a long flight. I have been known to take 4 to 5 magazines with me on the plane. If I don't get them all read there, then I have something to read during my evenings in my hotel room.
These are just a few of the places I love to go and relax. I would love to hear how you add in some me time for your summer. Share with me in the comments below.
