Sharing is caring!

These Pioneer Woman Onion Strings are simple and delicious to make. Full of crunchy flavor and make the perfect topping for burgers or just as a side for your favorite steak dinner.

One of my favorite restaurants serves a bbq burger topped with crunchy onion strings. They add a depth of flavor to that burger that is out of this world. I always ask for extra so that I can munch on them instead of my french fries.

I decided it was high time to make them at home as well. These little crunchy onions are so fantastic.

How to Make Pioneer Woman Onion Strings

To make these delicious little nuggets, all you need are a few simple ingredients.

  • 1 whole Large Onion
  • 2 c. Buttermilk
  • 2 c. All-purpose Flour
  • 1 tbsp. (scant) Salt
  • 1/4 tsp. (to 1/2 Teaspoon) Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 qt. (to 2 Quarts) Canola Oil
  • Black Pepper To Taste

Slice the onion very thin. Place the pieces in a baking dish and cover with buttermilk and soak for at least an hour. This adds a lot of flavor to the onions. You will not want to skip this step.

You can use milk, too, if you don’t have buttermilk handy. OR, you can make your own buttermilk by adding a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar to just under 2 cups of milk.

Combine dry ingredients and set aside—heat oil to 375 degrees.

Grab a handful of onions, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess, and PLUNGE into the hot oil. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as golden brown.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. That's it! Now, they are ready for burgers, as a side, top a salad with them — whatever your heart's desire.
