When you want to get away from the stresses of everyday life, nothing relaxes quite like the beach. It’s nice to sit there and soak up the sun without a care in the world.
Yet, at a certain point in the vacation you get bored just sitting on the beach. Even swimming and playing catch on the beach ends up getting boring. You need to do something else.
When you yearn for something a little more exciting then you have to look for some beach alternatives. Whether you are on vacation as a family, or a couple, there are loads of things to do on the coast that doesn’t involve working on your tan.
In this article, I will give you several ideas on how to add some adventure into your beach vacation.
#1 Get out on the water
One of the most exciting things about being on the coast is to get out on a boat and enjoy the waves and the sights of the sea. The coast is prettier when you are looking back at it rather than just looking at the waves from the beach.
You can usually find boat excursions in just about every vacation spot on the coast. Sea Racer is a good example of one that operates out of Fort Myers in Florida. You can go for a boost of adrenaline on a fast motor boat, or take a more leisurely and relaxing ride out on the water on a dinner boat.
It’s another world out on the water with lots to see if you are looking for it. For example, in the Southern states you can often see dolphins swimming alongside the boat.
#2 Go whale watching
Seeing a giant of the sea up close and personal almost always leaves an impression that will stay with you for a long time. The tour operators know where the feeding grounds are for many different species of whale so you are almost guaranteed to see some whales cresting out of the water.
Many of the excursions have to get out a few miles from shore to get where they know the whales will be so be prepared to be on the boat for quite a while. You usually have two options for the whale watches. Either a half day or full day. A half day can stretch up to four hours depending on how long it takes to get to the whales.
A full day tour can easily go up to eight hours so make sure you know that you can handle the rigors of being on the open sea for that long. And consider your kids before you book a full day excursion. If they have never been on a boat before, then they may not enjoy that long a day.
#3 Go on a fishing charter
No matter where you are, if you are on a coast, there are fishing charters that you can book. Like whale watches you have options for half day and full day so you can decide how long you want to be out fishing. You also usually have options as to how many people you want to go out with.
There are boats that take all comers and you will be out fishing with up to 20 people or more. Or, if you want to just go out with your friends and family then there are smaller boats that you can book privately.
Either one has its pluses and minuses. For instance, on the bigger boats you can save a lot of money and still be out catching fish. The downside is that you may have to muscle into the rail to find a spot to fish if it is a full boat.
When you book privately, you have a lot more space and don’t have to jostle for position with a bunch of other people. You also have more of a connection with the captain who is going to make sure that you enjoy the experience. The downside is the price. You can spend a few hundred dollars apiece depending on the size of the party.
There are so many things to do when you take a vacation on the coast that suits just about every taste. Even if you don’t like boats there are a lot of things going on in the villages or towns where the beaches are.
From wine tasting to pick your own fruits, to just sitting on a balcony overlooking the water, you can find a lot of things to do that don’t involve cleaning sand out of your bathing suit and dealing with sunburns.
