Amsterdam from a different perspective: walking among its charms

Sharing is caring!

Beyond its best-known tourist attractions, Amsterdam is known for its vibrant culture, beautiful canals, busy streets, and all the amazing things you can do while you’re visiting it.

Don’t get us wrong, the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and other staples are musts — but those in search of something more unique can explore another version of Amsterdam.

Whether you want to explore the city with a free walking tour Amsterdam or meander through hidden gems, beautiful streets, or historic neighborhoods, let's take a look at some of the hidden gems of the city.

Unique spots in Jordaan

The Jordaan, with its alleyways and historic buildings, is a secret for most tourists. Formerly a working-class area, the Jordaan is one of the most desired areas in Amsterdam today — and maintains its charm for old times sake. Its cobblestone alleyways unveil traditional Amsterdam courtyards, artisan shops, and cozy cafés.

A highlight of your trip could very well be exploring the peaceful canals lined with houseboats and flowers in Jordaan. This picturesque part of the city is filled with boutique shops and peaceful places to eat. Pro tip: look out for “De Negen Straatjes” or (Nine Streets) in this district, which makes a perfect daytime stroll. Each street is unique, with businesses such as vintage clothes and specialized cheese shops, which visit even more special.

Walk along quiet canals

The city's more discreet waterways are a tranquil getaway from Amsterdam's central canals. The friendly whisper of water going downstream in the canals creates a soothing soundtrack as you walk along these tranquil waterways.

No matter what canals you’re walking along, you can find plenty of panoramic views on the bridges and at waterfronts to find peace of mind and enjoy a bit of quiet time.

And if you are out for a walk along the canals, try one of the many hidden eateries you will find in residential streets. At these, you could meet locals to have a coffee or some Dutch meals and discover the authentic Amsterdam life.

NDSM Werf artistic enclave

For those looking for an artsier feel, there is always NDSM Wharf. A creative and innovative cultural complex on the northern bank of the IJ River in what used to be a shipping yard, you will find a different version of Amsterdam here. A short ferry ride and you are surrounded by street art, industrial infrastructure, and artistic venues.

The huge murals and installations on NDSM Wharf will mesmerize you with their grandeur. It is an open-air gallery, a reflection on the dynamic art scene in Amsterdam that shows what visions of contemporary art international artists have.

Year-round festivals celebrating music, film, food, and sustainability are held at the wharf. The NDSM Wharf is the embodiment of Amsterdam's innovation, whether it be during a festival or on any other day!

Beautiful streets and paths

There are some beautiful streets to wander down and lots of scenic walks in Amsterdam — well beyond its big tourist spots. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite ones.

Hof's beauty is an ideal place for a city walk, with green streets and ancient houses, like in Plantage. The Plantage's verdant pocket — specifically the Hortus Botanicus and Artis Zoo—provides an escape from urban life. The calmness of the place is so inviting that you will leave all your stress and spend some time with nature while enjoying city life.

You can also walk along the Amstel river — perhaps even more opportunities to marvel at the river itself and its fancy bridges, that have stood the test of time in a very conspicuous manner. The route will take you through residential and rural areas, demonstrating how the city of Amsterdam is equally mixed with urban life and the outdoors.

Enjoying Amsterdam's cuisine

One of the things you should never skip in Amsterdam is its food scene. While you explore the city, take in its vibrant food scene. You will find something for every palate in Amsterdam, whether it be classic Dutch treats or international dishes.

Begin with a culinary tour of one of the city's famous street markets, be it Albert Cuyp or Noordermarkt. It serves stroopwafels, herring, artisanal cheeses, and fresh veggies.

Or, if you want something more casual, you can opt for a more laid-back meal by visiting one of the city's quaint cafés or bistros. You can’t go wrong with this option, either!

All the while, walking through Amsterdam offers you a fresh perspective and spiritual insight. Hopefully, less common paths, beautiful streets, and lively neighborhoods will help you realize that Amsterdam is a small city that offers many different layers to the surface filled only with tourists.
