taco pizza

This is one of those fun dinner recipes that everyone can customize. Add lettuce and tomatoes, pile on the jalapeños, drizzle it with taco sauce, or finish it with a big dollop of sour cream. There really isn't a wrong way to make it!

Taco Pizza is perfect for an easy weeknight dinner, family pizza night, game day, or anytime you're craving something a little different.

Why You'll Love This Taco Pizza

There are so many reasons this recipe deserves a spot in your dinner rotation.

First, it's incredibly easy to make. Using a prepared pizza crust or your favorite homemade pizza dough keeps prep time to a minimum.

It's also completely customizable. Think of the baked pizza as your base and then set out bowls of toppings so everyone can finish their slice exactly how they like it.

And perhaps the best part? You get the best of both worlds — crispy pizza crust and gooey melted cheese combined with all those bold, savory taco flavors.

Ingredients for Taco Pizza

For the pizza, you'll need:

  • 1 pizza dough or prepared pizza crust
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • Water, according to taco seasoning package directions
  • 1 can refried beans
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups shredded Mexican blend or cheddar cheese
  • Taco sauce, for serving

For the toppings, try:

  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced black olives
  • Diced red or green onion
  • Sliced jalapeños
  • Sour cream
  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Crushed tortilla chips
  • Fresh cilantro

You don't have to use every topping. Choose a few favorites or turn dinner into a DIY taco pizza bar and let everyone build their own slice.

How to Make Taco Pizza

Start by preheating your oven according to the directions for your pizza crust or dough. If you're using homemade pizza dough, I like to get the oven nice and hot so the bottom of the crust gets crispy.

While the oven heats, brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Break it apart as it cooks, then drain away any excess grease.

Add the taco seasoning and the amount of water called for on the seasoning packet. Stir everything together and allow the meat to simmer for a few minutes until the liquid has reduced and the beef is coated in all that delicious taco seasoning.

Next, prepare your pizza dough.

Roll or stretch the dough onto a pizza pan, baking sheet, or pizza stone. If your particular dough needs to be partially baked before adding the toppings, bake it for a few minutes at this point.

Instead of traditional pizza sauce, we're going to use refried beans.

Warm the beans slightly so they're easier to spread, then spoon them over the pizza crust. Spread them almost to the edges, leaving a small border for the crust.

Sprinkle the seasoned taco meat evenly over the beans.

Now comes the cheese!

Cover the pizza with shredded Mexican blend cheese, cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack, or a combination of your favorites.

Bake the pizza according to your crust directions until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted and bubbly.

Add the Fresh Taco Toppings

Here's where Taco Pizza gets really good.

Once the pizza comes out of the oven, let it rest for about 5 minutes before adding your fresh toppings.

Pile on shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, black olives, onions, jalapeños, or whatever else you love on tacos.

Finish everything with a drizzle of taco sauce and a little sour cream.

For some extra crunch, sprinkle crushed tortilla chips over the top right before serving.

Then slice it up and dig in!

Don't Bake the Lettuce and Tomatoes

One of the biggest tips I can give you when making Taco Pizza is to wait until after baking to add your lettuce and tomatoes.

You want the lettuce cool and crisp and the tomatoes fresh and juicy. Putting them on before baking will cause them to wilt and release extra moisture onto the pizza.

Bake the meat, beans, and cheese with the pizza and save all those fresh ingredients for the end.

Make a Taco Pizza Bar

If you're serving this for family dinner or a party, turn it into a Taco Pizza Bar.

Bake the pizza with just the refried beans, taco meat, and cheese. Slice it, then put all the toppings into individual bowls.

Everyone can grab a slice and add whatever they want.

Set out lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, taco sauce, cilantro, and crushed tortilla chips.

This is especially fun if you're feeding kids because everyone gets to customize dinner without you having to make multiple meals.

Can I Use Chicken Instead of Ground Beef?

Absolutely!

Cooked shredded chicken makes a fantastic Taco Pizza. Toss it with a little taco seasoning before adding it to the pizza.

You could also use ground turkey, shredded pork, leftover carnitas, or even seasoned black beans for a meatless version.

It's also a great way to turn leftovers from taco night into an entirely different dinner the next evening.

What Cheese Is Best for Taco Pizza?

I usually reach for a Mexican-style shredded cheese blend because you get several cheeses in one bag and it melts beautifully.

Cheddar is another great choice.

You can also combine cheddar and Monterey Jack for a creamy, gooey cheese layer.

For a little extra flavor, sprinkle some crumbled queso fresco or cotija over the pizza after it comes out of the oven.

Can I Make Taco Pizza Ahead of Time?

You can prepare several of the components ahead of time.

Cook and season the ground beef and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can also chop the tomatoes, onions, and other toppings ahead of time.

When you're ready for dinner, assemble the pizza with the beans, meat, and cheese and bake.

I recommend waiting until you're ready to serve before adding lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and tortilla chips.

How to Store Leftover Taco Pizza

If you think you'll have leftovers, consider adding the fresh toppings to individual slices instead of covering the entire pizza.

That makes reheating much easier.

Store leftover pizza without the lettuce and other fresh toppings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.

Reheat individual slices in the oven, air fryer, or skillet until the crust is crisp and the cheese is hot.

Then add fresh toppings.

What to Serve With Taco Pizza

Taco Pizza is filling enough to be dinner all by itself, but you can easily turn it into a bigger meal.

Serve it alongside Mexican rice, black beans, chips and salsa, guacamole, street corn, or a simple Southwest salad.

For parties, add bowls of cheese dip and salsa with plenty of tortilla chips and you've got an easy Tex-Mex-inspired spread everyone can dig into.

Easy Homemade Taco Pizza

The next time you can't decide between tacos and pizza, make both!

This easy Taco Pizza has a crispy pizza crust topped with creamy refried beans, seasoned ground beef, and plenty of melted cheese before being finished with cool, crunchy taco toppings.

It's easy enough for a weeknight, fun enough for family pizza night, and customizable enough to please just about everyone at the table.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough or prepared pizza crust
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • Water according to seasoning packet directions
  • 1 (16-ounce) can refried beans
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • ¼ cup sliced black olives
  • ¼ cup diced onion
  • Taco sauce
  • Sour cream
  • Crushed tortilla chips, optional
  • Jalapeños, salsa, guacamole, and cilantro, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven according to the directions for your pizza dough or crust.
  2. Add the ground beef to a skillet and cook over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add the taco seasoning and water according to the package directions. Simmer until the liquid has reduced and the beef is well seasoned.
  4. Roll or stretch the pizza dough onto your pizza pan or baking sheet. Partially bake the crust first if required by your dough recipe.
  5. Warm the refried beans slightly, then spread them evenly over the pizza crust, leaving a small border around the edge.
  6. Sprinkle the seasoned taco meat evenly over the refried beans.
  7. Top with the shredded cheese.
  8. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or according to your pizza crust directions, until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove the pizza from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes.
  10. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, olives, onions, and any additional toppings you like.
  11. Drizzle with taco sauce and sour cream. Sprinkle crushed tortilla chips over the top for extra crunch.
  12. Slice and serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra crispy crust, pre-bake homemade pizza dough for a few minutes before adding the beans and toppings.
Warm the refried beans before spreading them onto the crust. Cold beans are much harder to spread and can tear soft pizza dough.
Keep the fresh toppings off the pizza until after baking.
If you're expecting leftovers, add lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and other cold toppings to individual slices instead of the entire pizza. This makes the leftovers much easier to reheat.
Ground turkey, shredded chicken, pulled pork, or seasoned black beans can all be substituted for the ground beef.
