Why Toddlers Love This Craft

Apple Ring Bird Feeders are ideal for toddlers because they get to spread, sprinkle, and create with their hands. The process is simple enough for young children while still helping develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Plus, toddlers are always excited to see birds enjoying something they made themselves!

Supplies Needed

  • 1 apple
  • Peanut butter
  • Bird seed
  • String or twine
  • Butter knife or child-safe spreading knife
  • Plate or shallow dish

How to Make an Apple Ring Bird Feeder

Step 1: Slice the Apple

Cut the apple into thick round slices, about ½ inch thick. Remove the center core from each slice to create an apple ring. If you want to skip this step you can. You can leave the slice whole like I did but you can also cut the center out if you prefer it.

Step 2: Spread the Peanut Butter

Give each toddler an apple ring and let them spread peanut butter all over both sides. This is a great sensory experience and helps strengthen fine motor skills.

Step 3: Add the Bird Seed

Pour bird seed onto a plate or shallow dish. Press the peanut butter-covered apple rings into the bird seed until they are completely coated.

Toddlers love patting and pressing the seeds onto the sticky peanut butter.

Step 4: Add the String

Thread a piece of string or twine through the center hole of the apple ring and tie it securely.

Step 5: Hang Outside

Find a tree branch in your yard and hang the apple ring bird feeders where birds can easily spot them.

Now comes the fun part—watching birds stop by for a snack!
