If you’re planning a trip to the Gulf Coast — or especially to Gulf Shores / Orange Beach — the Coastal Arts Center is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Nestled on a waterfront campus overlooking Wolf Bay, the Center combines gallery exhibitions, hands-on art studios, and event-ready grounds.

After our romantic dinner at the Villaggio Grille the night before, we headed back to our beach side condo to relax and rest and get some sleep.
The next day was a day full of fun that we had planned. We started out the day with a pottery class we were taking at the Coastal Arts Center in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. If you want a really awesome day of fun that is completely different than anything you have experienced, you will want to do something like this!
When my husband and I first saw our itinerary for Gulf Shores, we both laughed out loud when we saw we were taking a pottery class together. Neither of us had ever done anything like this before, so we were both pretty nervous.
Why It’s Unique — A Blend of Culture + Coastal Charm
What makes the Coastal Arts Center stand out is how it weaves together regional art, immersive creative experiences, and coastal ambiance:
It’s great for a rainy day or when you want a break from typical tourist things; art + calm + coastal breeze = a peaceful alternative to crowds.
The waterfront setting with views of Wolf Bay and moss-draped oaks give the place a relaxed, natural beauty — a nice contrast to the typical beach-day vibe.
You’re not just looking at art — you can make it. The glass-blowing and pottery studios offer a hands-on way to remember your visit (and bring home a one-of-a-kind piece).
When we got there, our instructor put our minds at ease. She sat down at the pottery wheel and showed us what to do and laughed and chatted with us as if we were old friends.

I never expected that out of all the fun things we did while in Gulf Shores — Alligator Alley, eating at Lulu's and enjoying the live entertainment — NOTHING compared to the fun we had making pottery together.
Stephen wound up being a PRO when it was our turn to try the pottery wheel. Him being in construction and all, he made the most beautiful pottery, but me? I just could NOT get the hang of it. I laughed myself silly at my pots.

After finishing up our pottery class, we purchased a couple of items that had been made there and headed over to another building where the glass blowing and bead making were going on.

🎨 What the Center Offers
- The hub is a 10,000-square-foot, two-story fine art gallery that features works by local Gulf Coast artists — paintings, sculptures, pottery, and more.
- Visitors can explore two active studios:
- The Hot Shop — Alabama’s premier hot-glass studio where you can watch glass artists in action or even sign up for a “make-your-own” glass-blowing class.
- The Clay Studio — offers pottery and clay classes, including wheel-throwing and hand-building, for beginners and experienced potters alike.
- A gift shop highlights locally made art — glass pieces, pottery, and other handcrafted items — perfect for souvenirs or unique gifts.
- The Center hosts rotating exhibits, classes, and art-camp programs (including summer camps and youth programming), making it a great spot for families or anyone wanting a creative break from the beach.
We had such a great time and cannot wait to go back and make something else.
