Copycat Tajin Seasoning

Sharing is caring!

Create your very own Tajin seasoning at home and kick the stuff from the store. This simple recipe is made of tart lime crystals and combined with two kinds of ground pepper, salt, and sugar, for a perfectly balanced seasoning. Great on countless meats, spice up side dishes, sprinkled on fresh fruits, and more! It has the best flavor of any homemade seasoning blend I make.

I don't know about you but I love Tajin and use it in all my Mexican cuisine. My favorite way to eat it is sprinkled on watermelon or oranges, but there are so many more uses for it. Instead of buying it from the grocery store, why not make this homemade version? Here's how I do it.

How to Make This Tajin Recipe at Home

Tajin seasoning, or as it is widely known as tajín clásico is a popular Mexican spice blend with a chili lime flavor. It is both refreshing and tart making it the perfect Mexican seasoning blend to use on just about anything. The nice touch of lime flavor has to be my favorite part of this seasoning mix.

For this homemade chili lime seasoning recipe, you only need a handful of ingredients. Here's the list —

  • 2 Tablespoons fresh Lime Zest that has been dried or Tru lime crystals which are dehydrated lime juice
  • 1 Tablespoon fine ground sea Salt (or you can use regular table salt)
  • 1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 Tablespoon Guajillo Chili Powder (you can order this on Amazon)
  • ½ Tablespoon White Granulated Sugar

Combine all ingredients including the chile powders in a small mixing bowl and whisk until all lumps are gone and everything is fully combined.

Store in an airtight container in a cool dry area (aka your spice cabinet) for up to 5 weeks.

Do not leave the spice uncovered for even a few hours or it will harden up.

I used these spice jars to store mine and they worked great, not to mention they’re the perfect size for this recipe. You can also give a spice jar with this seasoning mix in it as a housewarming gift for a friend.

What Does Homemade Tajín Seasoning Taste Like?

This Mexican spice blend tastes salty, citrusy, and a little bit spicy. It tastes sharp, tangy, savory, and spicy all at once. The spicy comes from the guajillo powder and chipotle powder.

It adds a zing to both sweet and savory foods and all your favorite fruits.

What Can I Use Homemade Tajin on?

Sprinkle Tajin on fruit to add a nice contrast to the sweetness of things like watermelon, pineapple, mango, and oranges.

Spice up veggies like corn on the cob, avocados, cucumbers, and my favorite — roasted potatoes.

If you are serving chicken, Tajin goes great on it. You can also use it in place of taco seasoning on your tacos or even in your soup!

If you like making fun cocktails or mocktails, this seasoning blend is perfect to coat the rim of your glasses. Make a spicy margarita, or even serve a spicy bloody Mary.

How Long Will This Homemade Spice Last?

Store homemade spices in an airtight container or airtight jar in your spice cupboard and keep it in a cool, dry location. It should stay fresh for at least a month up to 4 months. I also like to store mine in a glass jar.

You can use these little packets to help keep the seasoning blend fresh.
