My Visit to Chattanooga

At the end of September, my family and I ventured to Chattanooga, Tennessee. We love the Volunteer State and have been to other cities like Gatlinburg and Nashville.

I had never been to Chattanooga before, but I had heard how gorgeous and alive this city was. My family and I really had a great time.

Why Visit Chattanooga?

Chattanooga has transformed itself into a thriving travel destination filled with unique attractions, local restaurants, and beautiful natural scenery. The city is incredibly walkable downtown, making it easy to explore shops, museums, parks, and restaurants all in one trip.

Visitors love Chattanooga because it offers:

  • Stunning mountain scenery
  • Outdoor adventures for every skill level
  • Family-friendly attractions
  • Excellent local dining
  • Historic sites and train experiences
  • A laid-back Southern atmosphere

It’s the kind of destination where you can spend the morning hiking to waterfalls and the evening enjoying rooftop dining overlooking the river.

What to See and Do in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Sites to See:

While we were there, we packed two wonderful days into sightseeing. There is SO much to do while in Chattanooga. We went from about 9 am every morning until around 9 pm every night for the two days that we were there, and we barely scratched the surface!

In the area where we stayed, we were just minutes from Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, Rock City, the Tennessee Aquarium and Imax Theater, the Riverwalk, and more.

We took the shuttle to most of these things, which really saved a ton of driving and gas and allowed us time to meet other tourists and some of the locals who helped us pick out places to eat!

Explore Lookout Mountain

One of the most iconic places to visit in Chattanooga is Lookout Mountain. This scenic mountain area is home to several of the city’s biggest attractions and offers breathtaking panoramic views.

While visiting, you can explore:

  • Rock City Gardens
  • Ruby Falls
  • The Incline Railway

Rock City features winding garden paths, massive rock formations, and the famous “See Seven States” overlook. Ruby Falls takes visitors deep underground to see a stunning waterfall inside a cave, while the Incline Railway offers a thrilling ride up the mountainside.

Walk Across the Walnut Street Bridge

The Walnut Street Bridge is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world and connects downtown Chattanooga to the North Shore district. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, especially at sunset.

Along the way, you’ll find:

  • Riverfront parks
  • Ice cream shops
  • Local boutiques
  • Outdoor dining
  • Beautiful views of the Tennessee River

The North Shore area is also a great spot to relax and enjoy Chattanooga’s local culture.

Visit the Tennessee Aquarium

Perfect for families, the Tennessee Aquarium is consistently ranked among the best aquariums in the country. The exhibits showcase both freshwater and saltwater habitats and feature everything from playful otters to sharks and colorful tropical fish.

Kids especially love:

  • Penguin exhibits
  • Touch tanks
  • River Journey exhibits
  • Butterfly gardens

The aquarium sits right along the riverfront, making it easy to combine with other downtown attractions.

Ride the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

Train lovers and history buffs won’t want to miss the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Visitors can ride restored vintage trains through scenic Tennessee countryside while learning about the region’s railroad history.

Seasonal train rides and themed excursions make this attraction especially fun during holidays and the fall foliage season.

Best Places to Eat in Chattanooga

Chattanooga’s food scene continues to grow, with everything from Southern comfort food to trendy brunch spots and upscale dining.

A few local favorites include:

  • The Blue Plate for classic Southern breakfast
  • State of Confusion for Latin-American inspired dishes
  • Clumpies Ice Cream Co. for homemade ice cream
  • Tony's Pasta Shop & Trattoria for Italian favorites

Don’t forget to grab coffee at one of Chattanooga’s many local cafés while exploring downtown.

We ate at places you can only eat in that area. I wanted to experience the food of the city, so we tried Urban Stack — a burger joint known for its fresh and locally grown ingredients.

The food and atmosphere were SO amazing! Lupi’s Pizza Pies — this one Kayla (my daughter) discovered online, and since they boasted about their fresh mozzarella, she wanted to go and try it.

The pizza was fresh, and all ingredients were grown locally.

Best Time to Visit Chattanooga

Chattanooga is beautiful year-round, but spring and fall are especially popular thanks to mild temperatures and gorgeous scenery.

Spring

Spring brings blooming flowers, outdoor festivals, and ideal hiking weather.

Summer

Summer is perfect for river activities and outdoor adventures, though temperatures can get warm and humid.

Fall

Fall is arguably the best time to visit thanks to colorful mountain foliage and cooler temperatures.

Winter

Winter offers smaller crowds and holiday events throughout the city.

Where to Stay in Chattanooga

Visitors can choose from:

  • Boutique downtown hotels
  • Family-friendly chains
  • Cozy cabins
  • Mountain retreats
  • Riverfront accommodations

Staying downtown makes it easy to walk to restaurants, attractions, and the riverfront.

We stayed at the Chattanooga Marriott, which I totally recommend if you go and visit Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is located right in the heart of downtown, with all the attractions. In fact, it was such a gorgeous night on Saturday that we decided to walk so I could take some photos of the nightlife.

About the Chattanooga Marriott

If you are visiting Chattanooga, this is the place that you will want to stay. On site, you have your very own restaurant and dining experience (which I suggest because the breakfast bar is fabulous!), The Terrace Grille. The atmosphere is a casual dining experience and one that your whole family will enjoy.

Not only that, but they have their own Starbucks coffee shop that I found myself in every single morning ( I am totally addicted to the Pumpkin Spice Latte and Peppermint Mochas).

And if a lounge is your thing, they have that too! The Kick’s Lounge is open for dinner and provides you with entertainment, booze, and cocktails while you watch your favorite sports team.

The best thing that I have already said is that all the attractions, eating places, and shops are within walking minutes or a bus ride away. No worrying about traffic or gas when you can walk to everything you want to visit.
