Why You'll Love These Monster Cinnamon Rolls
Halloween is one of my favorite times to get creative in the kitchen. I love taking everyday recipes and giving them a fun holiday twist.
These monster cinnamon rolls are one of those recipes that look impressive but are surprisingly simple to make.
Here's why you'll love them:
- Fun for kids: Let the little ones decorate their own monster cinnamon rolls with colorful icing, candy eyeballs, and vampire teeth.
- Made from scratch: These rolls start with a basic homemade cinnamon roll dough that's soft, fluffy, and full of cinnamon sugar flavor.
- Easy to customize: Change the icing colors, add extra eyeballs, or give your monster a silly expression.
- Perfect for Halloween: Serve them for Halloween breakfast, classroom celebrations, or a spooky-themed brunch.
- Make-ahead friendly: Prepare the cinnamon rolls the night before and decorate them the next morning.

How to Make Monster Cinnamon Rolls
Step 1: Make the cinnamon roll dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Allow the mixture to sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Add the remaining sugar, melted butter, egg, salt, and flour.
Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 6–8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Make the cinnamon sugar filling
While the dough rises, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and roll it into a rectangle approximately 12 by 18 inches.
Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the butter.
Step 3: Roll and cut the cinnamon rolls
Starting with the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log.
Using a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss, cut the log into 12 equal cinnamon rolls.
Place the rolls in a greased 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Step 4: Bake the cinnamon rolls
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Bake the cinnamon rolls for 22–28 minutes, or until lightly golden brown and cooked through in the center.
Remove from the oven and allow them to cool for about 10–15 minutes before adding the colorful monster icing.
You want the rolls to be slightly warm, but not so hot that all the icing runs off.
How to Make the Melted Monster Icing
This is where the real Halloween fun begins!
In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 3 tablespoons of milk.
Add additional milk, a teaspoon at a time, until the icing is thick but pourable.
Divide the icing evenly among four small bowls.

Add a few drops of gel food coloring to each bowl until you have bright, bold Halloween colors.
I like using blue, red, purple, and green because they really make the cinnamon rolls look like crazy little monsters!
My tip: Gel food coloring works best because it creates vibrant colors without thinning the icing too much.
How to Decorate Monster Cinnamon Rolls
Now for my favorite part — turning ordinary cinnamon rolls into silly little monsters!

- Place the slightly warm cinnamon rolls on a serving platter or leave them in the baking dish.
- Spoon a generous amount of colored icing over each cinnamon roll. Let the icing drip naturally down the sides to create that fun melted monster effect.
- While the icing is still wet, press candy eyeballs into the top of each roll.
- Add a set of Dracula teeth to give your monster a funny or spooky grin.
- Repeat with the remaining rolls, using different colors and combinations of eyeballs.
I love making some monsters with just one giant eye and others with three or four little eyes. There are no rules when it comes to decorating these!
The messier the icing looks, the better. You want the monsters to look like they're melting right off the cinnamon rolls.
And you can also just leave them all in the pan and muddle all the colors together to look like one giant monster. The possibilities are endless!

Important: If you're using hard plastic vampire teeth instead of edible candy teeth, only use them as removable decorations and take them off before eating.
Tips for Making the Best Halloween Monster Cinnamon Rolls
Don't overbake the cinnamon rolls. You want them to stay soft and fluffy. Start checking around the 22-minute mark.
Use gel food coloring. Liquid food coloring can make the icing too thin, especially when you're trying to achieve bright Halloween colors.
Let the icing drip. Don't worry about making everything look perfect. The drippy icing is what gives these cinnamon rolls their melted monster appearance.
Decorate while the icing is wet. The candy eyeballs and teeth will stick much better before the icing begins to set.
Use different-sized candy eyeballs. Mixing large and small eyes gives each monster its own personality.
Let the kids help. Set out bowls of icing, candy eyeballs, and teeth and let everyone make their own monster.
Can I Use Store-Bought Cinnamon Rolls?
Absolutely!
While I love making homemade cinnamon rolls, sometimes you just need a quick and easy Halloween breakfast.
You can use refrigerated canned cinnamon rolls instead.
Simply bake the rolls according to the package instructions, then make the colorful icing and decorate them with candy eyeballs and Dracula teeth.
You can even tint the icing that comes with the refrigerated cinnamon rolls if you don't want to make your own.
This is a great shortcut for busy Halloween mornings!

Can I Make Monster Cinnamon Rolls Ahead of Time?
Yes! You can prepare the cinnamon rolls the night before.
After placing the cut rolls in the baking dish, cover them tightly and refrigerate overnight instead of allowing the second rise at room temperature.
The next morning, remove the rolls from the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for approximately 45–90 minutes, or until puffy.
Bake as directed, allow them to cool slightly, and decorate.
You can also make the colored icing ahead of time and store it in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Stir well before using, adding a few drops of milk if needed.
For the best appearance, wait until just before serving to add the candy decorations.
How to Store Leftover Monster Cinnamon Rolls
Store leftover cinnamon rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
If you plan to reheat them, it's best to do so before adding the candy decorations.
You can also freeze undecorated cinnamon rolls for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, warm gently, and decorate before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes these cinnamon rolls look like monsters?
The combination of colorful dripping icing, candy eyeballs, and Dracula teeth creates the fun melted monster effect. Each cinnamon roll looks like its own silly Halloween creature.
What is the best icing for monster cinnamon rolls?
A simple powdered sugar glaze works perfectly because you can control the consistency. It needs to be thick enough to coat the cinnamon rolls but thin enough to drip down the sides.
Can I make these without yeast?
Yes! You can use your favorite no-yeast cinnamon roll recipe or refrigerated cinnamon rolls and decorate them the same way.
Can I use cream cheese frosting instead?
Definitely! Cream cheese frosting is delicious on cinnamon rolls. Just thin it with a little milk until it reaches a drippy consistency, then divide and color it.
