Beer Cheese Fondue

Sharing is caring!

This Beer Cheese Fondue is a copycat recipe for The Melting Pot Fondue restaurant. Making fondue at home is simple and easy and makes for great date nights, and the best part is that you can do it right from the comfort of your own home.

This melted cheese dish is tried and true and will become everyone's favorite. Serve this at holiday functions like Valentine's dinner, New Year's Eve parties, birthdays, anniversaries, and more.

The dipping possibilities are endless with this easy recipe. Furthermore, perfect pairing ideas would be apples, bread, meat like steak or chicken, soft pretzels, cauliflower florets, fingerling potatoes, and your favorite veggies like steamed broccoli florets or Brussels sprouts.

How to Make the Perfect Beer Cheese Fondue

To start with when you want to make fondue, you are going to need an electric fondue pot. The pot comes with everything you need.

However, if you don't have a fondue pot, you can do this with a stock pot and a glass bowl. Just add water to the stock pot and place the glass bowl on top and allow it to boil to create the perfect fondue pot.

From there, grab all your simple ingredients and start making a luscious beer cheese. Here is what you need —

  • Swiss Cheese
  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • Flour
  • dry mustard
  • garlic powder
  • black pepper
  • Lager beer (I use Bud Light)

If you are not a fan of Swiss or cheddar cheese, you can use other cheeses. You just have to check the moisture in the cheese. Mozzarella has a lot of moisture and does not do well for fondue. It gets too gloopy. For best results, be sure to choose good melting cheeses.

To make the fondue:

Cut up a loaf of French bread into bread cubes. Set the slices aside. Chop up and chunk your other dippable items and set those aside also.

Grate 1 cup of cheddar cheese and 1 cup of Swiss cheese in a small bowl. Add in 1 tablespoon of flour and mix well to coat the cheese.

Heat the fondue pot and bring the water to a gentle boil over medium heat. Place the fondue pot over the water and add in 1/2 cup of beer.

Now add in the dry mustard, garlic powder, and pepper. Mix well.

Once the beer has warmed, add the cheese a little at a time making sure to stir cheese mixture constantly with a wooden spoon until it is all melted. The cheese should have a runny consistency. There should not be any clumps in the cheese. If it seems clumpy, add a little more beer. If it seems too runny, add more cheese or a little more flour.

Once you get the cheese to the perfect consistency, use the fondue forks and dip your favorite chunks of food in the melty cheese from the communal pot. My favorite is the crusty bread topped with cherry tomatoes.

Extra Add-in Flavors

I like to keep a bottle of Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce or cayenne pepper out so that as people are dipping their chosen food item, they can drizzle on a little bit of extra flavor.

What If I Don't Like Beer?

If you don't want to use the beer in your cheese fondue, you can skip it. You can make a Classic Swiss Fondue if you prefer which does not use beer at all.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Swiss Cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup of Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1 tablespoon of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Fresh black pepper
  • 1/2 cup to 1 cup of beer
  • Dipping items like french bread, apples, soft pretzels, veggies, and more

Instructions

  1. Chunk up the bread and the veggies to your desired size. I like 1" chunks the best. Set everything aside.
  2. Toss the two cheeses with the flour. Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of the fondue pot, add in 1/2 cup of beer.
  4. Once the beer is warmed through, add in the garlic powder, dry mustard, and fresh black pepper. Mix well.
  5. Now, begin adding in the cheese a little at a time until the cheese has melted completely and does not seem clumpy.
  6. Once the cheese has all been added, mix well. If the cheese is too thick, add in more beer until you get a runny and not clumpy consistency.
  7. If it seems too thin, add in more cheese or additional flour to tighten it up.
  8. Once you have the perfect consistency, use the fondue forks and dip the bread or other food in the cheese and enjoy.
