So let me show you how to make your own lemon pepper seasoning recipe that is good on anything you put it on — even popcorn!

How to Make the Best Lemon Pepper Seasoning

Store-bought seasonings always have extra added ingredients like citric acid and unwanted ingredients. This homemade seasoning blend has everything you could want in your spice mix. So what's in Lemon Pepper Seasoning? It's just a few simple ingredients —

  • 5 Tablespoons Dried Lemon Zest (this is just fresh lemon peel dried) — this has a bitter taste on its own — so don't taste it.
  • 2 Tablespoons Black Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • 2 Teaspoons Sea Salt or kosher salt
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and stir until combined. Store in an airtight container like a glass jar in the pantry for up to a month or longer. This spice can be kept at room temperature in your spice cabinet.

Lemon Pepper Seasoning Tips and Tricks

This seasoning can be adjusted to suit your tastes. Once mixed, do a taste test and adjust to your preferences. Some like more lemon zest, some like more pepper, some like to swap the garlic and onion amounts, and even adjust the amount of salt used.

It’s all up to you, but this is a great starting point. If you want the mixture to be finer, simply grind everything together in a spice grinder or coffee grinder.

For this recipe, buy high-quality ingredients for the best flavor profile. If you buy cheap ingredients, it will reflect in the finished taste.

You can make your own dried lemon zest using fresh lemon zest if preferred. You’ll just have to zest and dry about 10 fresh lemons on parchment paper on a baking sheet to reach the amount needed for this recipe.

The best way to use this seasoning is to use it like you would any store-bought lemon pepper. Whatever a recipe calls for, that’s how much you would use. If a recipe doesn’t have an amount, add based on taste. It's great in a salad dressing or even on french fries.
