Paula Deen’s Puff Pastry Burgers

Sharing is caring!

One day I was watching Paula Deen on Food Network and she made these delicious-looking Puff Pastry Burgers. I thought to myself, hey I can do that!

This recipe is SO much fun because you can add anything inside the flaky puff pastry to create the best burger ever!

I have added in the past, cole-slaw, avocado, bacon, tomato, french fries, etc. You could even season them with onion powder and garlic powder if you prefer that over the lemon and pepper seasoning I use.

How to Make Puff Pastry Burgers

It's really very easy. Just make your hamburger patties – but be careful of your beef, as some brands like Sysco beef have had to do recalls due to E. coli contamination.

Here is what you need to make these delicious burgers with the buttery puff pastry!

  • 1 pound of hamburger meat (I prefer lean ground beef as it has less grease in it. 80/20 has excess fat and will make the pastry dough soggy)
  • lemon and pepper seasoning
  • garlic salt
  • bacon slices, cooked for burgers
  • 6 slices of cheese
  • tomatoe slices
  • 1 package of frozen puff pastry sheets at room temperature
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon of water

Instructions

Pat out your hamburgers to your desired size. Now, season them with the lemon and pepper and garlic salt. Cook your burgers your preferred way–grilled, baked, or fried over medium-high heat.

While the burgers are cooking, lay out your puff pastry sheets so that they can thaw. I like to keep mine in the fridge when I know I am going to use them. Then I pull them out and they thaw quicker that way.

Cook the bacon and slice your tomatoes.

Once the burgers have cooked through, top each with a slice of cheese, and set them aside. I prefer sharp cheddar cheese.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Open the puff pastry sheets and slice each sheet into 4 squares using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife. Take a square of dough and roll it out with a rolling pin so it will spread a little. You might have to use a little flour if they stick to the work space any when you roll them out.

Take the burger and place it in the middle of the puff pastry sheet. Top it with the cooked bacon and tomatoes and even chopped onion. If you are feeling fancy, you can top the burgers with caramelized onions.

Fold the ends together to completely cover the burger and then press the seams together. You should have a closed pocket of meat inside that puff pastry. Continue until all the burgers have been covered. Place burgers seam side down on a large baking sheet covered in parchment paper.

Baking the Puff Pastry

Take the egg white (you can also use the egg yolk) and beat with the water. Brush the tops of the puff pastry burgers with the beaten egg wash and then place them in the oven to bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Before baking, you can add sesame seeds and create a sesame seed bun. You could even add a few horizontal cuts to the top for extra decoration on your burger.

Remove from the oven and serve them with a side of ketchup and mustard,or even a little steak sauce!

My family LOVES these and they are a huge hit! They go great served with Paula Deen Grilled Potatoes and a dessert of Old Fashioned Whoopie Pies.

If you are throwing a party, you can make these smaller and make Cheeseburger Puff Pastry Bites.

The puff pastry makes the perfect bun. It is nice and flaky, and super light in taste. Sometimes the heaviness of a bun is not my favorite, but these little nuggets are delicious!

Paula Deen has always been one of my favorite chefs. I have made a Paula Deen Chocolate Sheet Cake, Paula Deen House Seasoning, and the grilled potatoes I mentioned above.
