Pi Day is tomorrow and the best way to celebrate is with this delicious homemade Banana Cream Pie. If you love recipes like my Old Fashioned Banana Pudding, then you will definitely love the taste and flavor of this pie.
This pie recipe features homemade custard, fresh sliced bananas and homemade whipped cream are layered to create this delicious old fashioned banana cream pie from scratch.
So let me show you how to make this amazing pie!
For the filling of this recipe you will need —
- 1 pre-baked pie crust (use frozen crust or you can make your own homemade pie crust)
- 3 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 bananas, sliced
- 3 eggs
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
For the fresh whipped topping you will need —
- 8 oz heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
For the custard, warm your milk and then add it to the dry ingredients in a medium sized sauce pan. Cook on medium heat until it has thickened.
Beat the eggs slightly. Add a little of the custard mixture to the eggs to temper them. Mix and then add the egg mixture to the custard mixture.
Cook for about a minute longer. Remove from the heat and add the butter and vanilla. Mix well and set aside to cool.
Bake pie crust in the oven at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Remove and let cool.
Once the crust and the custard are cool, slice the bananas and place them in the bottom of the pie. If you want the bananas to not brown, drizzle the bananas with a little lemon juice before placing in the pie crust.
Cover the sliced bananas with the custard mixture.
In a KitchenAid mixer or with a handheld mixer, beat heavy whipping cream on high until peaks begin to show. Add powdered sugar and mix well. Top pie with mixture.
Place pie in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
