These soft pretzel bites with cheese sauce are the perfect appetizer for any get together. They make a simple party food for Christmas, New Year's Eve or any gathering you may be attending.
This recipe makes a ton and includes an easy, two ingredient cheese dip to accompany the soft and salty pretzel bites.
One of my favorite snacks are pretzel bites. I love them. Even when we go out to eat, if there are pretzels with beer cheese sauce on the menu, I am going to get it — always.
Like I said, this recipe makes a ton of pretzel bites. You can serve them now, or you can freeze them until later. I serve them with my 2 ingredient cheese sauce — and everyone is NUTS for these.
How to Make Soft Pretzel Bites with Cheese Sauce
You will need:
PRETZEL BITES
- 1 ½ cups water, lukewarm
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant rise yeast (¼ ounce packet)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups flour
- ½ cup baking soda
- 1 egg, beaten
- ½ tablespoon water
- Coarse salt, for sprinkling on top
In the bowl of a stand mixer, add warm water and yeast. Whisk together. Add in the butter, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk all the ingredients together until they are well combined.
Put the dough hook on the mixer and turn it on low speed. Slowly add in 3 cups of flour, adding a ½ cup at a time, until the mixture is combined and begins pulling away from the sides and is no longer sticky.
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for 2 minutes and shape into a ball. Place in a large mixing bowl that has been lightly coated with cooking spray. Cover and let rest for about 10 minutes.
Roll out those pretzel bites
While the dough is resting, bring a large pot of water and baking soda to a boil. Cut the dough into six equal pieces, roll each piece into 1 inch long ropes, then cut each rope into 1 ½ inch bites.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a couple of baking sheets with parchment paper.
Add each piece of dough bite into the boiling water. Be sure to work in small batches. Now, let each batch cook for 20 seconds. Remove from the water with a slotted spoon and place pretzel bites on the baking sheets.
In a small bowl, combine egg and water. Beat together. Brush beaten egg wash over each pretzel bite and then sprinkle with coarse salt.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and let bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Serve with homemade cheese sauce for the best pretzel bites you have ever eaten.
